From 1 Timothy 6:1-10

Doctrine matters.  Christians are called to reject any teaching that “does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness.” We take doctrine and theology seriously.  Sometimes this can be viewed as exclusive or unnecessarily divisive; however, the truth of our faith is worth making some people upset. It is not something we can water down, downplay, or ignore.

One particularly bad way of distorting the truth is those who use Christianity to turn a profit – the prosperity gospel.  Paul extols “godliness with contentment” and encourages Christians to be content with their basic needs being cared for.  He even goes so far as to say “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith.” Money can become an idol very quickly if we make it more important than it should be.

Focus on God

We are reminded in these verses that God graciously has given us good and faithful doctrine.

Function in Our Lives

We are encouraged to focus on the truths of God.

Topics to Pray About                                                               

• Thank God for good theology and those who actively promote it.
• Confess to God the times where you downplay or water down or ignore sound doctrine.
• Ask God to bless His church and its mission.
